San Diego Children and Nature Collaborative

The San Diego Children and Nature Collaborative (SDCaN) was organized in January 2009, with a mission of inspiring communities to nurture, empower, and engage youth in cultivating their relationship with nature. In the first year, SDCaN has held bi-monthly meetings with participants from more than 50 organizations, and monthly meetings of a Steering Group that has drafted the mission, strategic goals, and current structure. Other accomplishments include organizing interest groups for Schools, Schoolyard Habitats, Families, and Communications; attracting seed money for marketing Richard Louv’s talk on February 24, 2009; declaring April as “Children and Nature Awareness” month by the City and County of San Diego; attending the national C&NN meeting in September. A grant awarded by the Sempra Foundation supports the nearby nature school field trips pilot program, family nature clubs, learning workshops, a communications strategy, design of an interactive website, and community mapping to reflect community diversity and increase opportunities for children learning in nature and playing outdoors.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
