Connecting Children with Nature in Homer

Kachemak Bay
95 Sterling Hwy
Homer, Alaska 99603 United States

Connecting Children with Nature in Homer is a community group - made up of community residents, environmental educators, non-profit and agency staff, Rotary members, a pastor, medical professionals, preschool and K-12 teachers, homeschool parents, PTA members, and more - who are putting their energy and resources into helping local children reconnect with nature. This group meets twice a year, has a listserve, and to date has accomplished the following initiatives: a Homer Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights (magnets for everybody!), Kids Outdoor Day (proclaimed by the Mayor as June 20th), collaborative Kids in Nature workshops for parents & caregivers, a Facebook group, and renowned speaker and C&NN Vice President Martin LeBlanc sharing his insights on the health benefits of youth getting outdoors with the community of Homer last November. Initiatives on the horizon include creation of a Grow Outside in Homer booklet for parents, a brainstorming session for how to help at risk families get outdoors, and new Kids in Nature workshops.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
