C&NNC&NN has designated April "Children & Nature Awareness Month."

As part of this effort, we're inviting network members to list their April programs and share their strategies for building public awareness.

April 2010 is the third annual Children & Nature Awareness Month. This year, C&NN has two goals: First, to encourage parents to form their own Nature Clubs for Families. And, second, to invite grandparents and older outdoor enthusiasts to do their part to reconnect children and nature.

C&NN’s Children & Nature Awareness Month: A New Tradition

Last year, the response of local governments, private groups and individuals across the country was an unqualified success. From the special proclamations of civic leaders to a collection of songs written to celebrate the movement, Children & Nature Awareness Month has both inspired those already interested in reconnecting children with nature and focused the attention of others on the importance of outdoor play in childhood development. It has also helped bring attention, visibility, and a sense of community to the many outstanding efforts already under way.

This year, our extensive Google map and directory lists over 160 events. Look for it on the Children & Nature Network Web site and see what’s happening in your region.

"If you go with long-term significance, my pick for the top story of not only 2009 but also of the 21st Century is the pandemic of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his best-selling outdoor book, Last Child in the Woods...."
— Bill Schneider, NewWest.Net
“Concerns about long-term consequences—affecting emotional well-being, physical health, learning abilities, environmental consciousness—have spawned a national movement to ‘leave no child inside.’ In recent months, it has been the focus of Capitol Hill hearings, state legislative action, grassroots projects, a U.S. Forest Service initiative to get more children into the woods and a national effort to promote a ‘green hour’ in each day.”
— Washington Post, June 2007
“The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines.”
Orion magazine, March/April 2007
